The programme at a glance

The jubilee edition of friedrich will be available for the entire year of 2018. This magazine, of course, looks back on FAU’s 275-year history, and perhaps even more importantly, looks at the future of research and teaching at the FAU.

275 years ago, a church service was held in Neustädter Church in Erlangen on 4 November to celebrate the founding of the University. After 275 years, the anniversary will now again fall on a Sunday, the perfect occasion to celebrate the University’s anniversary with a University service in the church at 10am on 4 November 2018.

On FAU’s actual birthday, the Dies Academicus, guests from across the jubilee year can expect a small surprise. Additionally, the three winners of the ‘My FAU’ film competition will make their debut, and ’The Hohenzollern and the FAU – Past and Present’ exhibition will open in the university library. In the context of the opening of the exhibition, FAU’s foundation documentation will be made accessible online for the first time.

In 1993, the ‘History of the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg 1743-1993’ was published by Prof. Dr. Alfred Wendehorst, the long-standing professor of the Department of Bavarian and Franconian History as well as the university archivist. Since then, a quarter of a century has passed. This gap in university history will be closed on this anniversary by one of FAU’s most celebrated historians, Prof. Dr. Gregor Schöllgen, with the book ‘Wissen in Bewegung. 275 Jahre FAU’.

During the Long Night of Science, citizens from around the region come to the University. In its jubilee year, FAU wants to go where the people are! For one day each, FAU will expand the offerings of the marketplaces of Erlangen, Fürth and Nuremberg.

Rowing works up an appetite. It is therefore fitting that the Roman patrol and convoy boat built by students, school pupils and other volunteers under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Boris Dreyer, expert in ancient history at FAU, should have its own bread. Not just any bread, of course, but genuine Rom...

Together with students, school pupils and other volunteers, FAU researchers are building a life-size Roman patrol and convoy boat according to the principles of the ancient history Professor, Dr. Boris Dreyer, with the support of the city of Erlangen, the Unibund, and Sparkasse Erlangen. In May, the ship will be launched as ‘Fridericiana Alexandrina Navis’ (FAN) and make its maiden voyage.

It even says so in the bible: man cannot live from bread alone. Beer is needed to go with it – especially if there is something to celebrate. Young brewers from the Chair of Bioprocess Engineering at FAU  decided to give their University a very special gift for its 275th birthday: its own anniversar...

After the gala concert to mark the beginning of the year of anniversary celebrations in January, the academic choir will be holding another concert for FAU's anniversary during the summer semester. On Thursday, 28 June 2018 at 8pm.

The jubilee year begins with an international scientific symposium on the topic ’Future of Research - Research of the Future’. As the focus is interdisciplinarity: FAU scientists from all disciplines, together with international colleagues, will look at the future of research.
