The Margravine Wilhelmine von Bayreuth (1709-1758) will be honoured in Prof. Dr. Christina Strunck’s international and interdisciplinary conference as FAU co-founder. The starting point of the conference includes new research on the library of the Margravine, donated to the Erlangen University on the occasion of its founding in 1743. The library reflects Wilhelmine’s wide-ranging interests which were shaped by the great themes of the Enlightenment. This is also reflected in her correspondence with her brother Friedrich (‘the Great’), and in her contact with Voltaire. The focus of the meeting will be on the Margravines international network and the cultural transfer it facilitated. The extensive familial network of royal siblings is considered, as well as her exchange with artists, musicians, collectors and scholars, both on the 1754/55 Italy trip and at the Bayreuth ‘Musenhof’.

Time: 11-13 October 2018

Location: Wassersaal, Orangerie, (11 October) and 00.3 PSG (12/13 October)
